Reconsider This: Regulate Facial Recognition

In this episode of Reconsider This, Blaise Zerega, the Editor in Chief of All Turtles, calls for comprehensive regulation of facial recognition software. Citing recent instances where employees at Amazon, Google, and Microsoft acted as the first line of defense against potential abuse of the software, Zerega suggests a GDPR-like approach is needed. This video was recorded on June 25, 2018.

UPDATE: On July 8, the New York Times published, Inside China’s Dystopian Dreams: A.I., Shame and Lots of Cameras, which details a use case Zerega warned against. The Chinese government uses AI and facial recognition to map people’s identities in public spaces.

On July 13, 2018, Microsoft President Brad Smith published a blog post, Facial recognition technology: The need for public regulation and corporate responsibility. Echoing Zerega’s argument, Smith writes, “We live in a nation of laws, and the government needs to play an important role in regulating facial recognition technology.”
