Introducing Twisty Tongue: A terrific tongue twister game to test your twisty tongue

“How much wood would a woodchuck chuck?” “I wish the wish you wish to wish.” No matter what languages you speak, tongue twisters are amusing—and pedagogic—for all. They test our ability to clearly articulate a series of similar-sounding words in a fun and engaging way.

These amusing verses inspired us to ask ourselves a question: what if we could combine the entertainment value of tongue twisters with the latest in machine learning technologies and package them into a delightful language learning experience?

Today we’re excited to announce our latest product: Twisty Tongue, a game that puts your pronunciation skills to the test using fun and challenging tongue twisters.

How it works

How many tongue twisters can your twisty tongue untwist? The goal of the game is simple and effective: master each of the initial 26 tongue twister cards spread across 2 game decks.

See tongue twisters like “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers” come to life as colorful, original illustrations. Earn stars by correctly pronouncing the phrase on each card. Stars allow you to unlock and collect additional cards. The more phrases you master, the trickier they get. You can even share your high scores and hilarious bloopers with friends on your favorite social media platforms.

Can’t get a perfect 5-star score on a particular card? We’ve got you covered! Actionable per-phoneme feedback helps you practice speaking each phrase so you can reach that perfect score. This makes Twisty Tongue great for everyone in the family, including kids and kids-at-heart. It’s also a fun and engaging way for TOEFL, TOEIC, and ESL students to quiz themselves on English pronunciation.

Why we built it

All Turtles designed the game in collaboration with our studio company Edwin. As part of our product-first and design-centric approach to building products, we brought together a talented and diverse team of designers, writers, researchers, engineers, voice actors and illustrators from around the globe.

The Edwin team started with a proof of concept that focused on the AI technology that powers the voice recognition and scoring functionality. They then worked alongside All Turtles to design a delightful experience around the AI with the user at the center of the product design process. Maintaining user privacy was also a top priority. The app uses on-device processing, thus eliminating the need to send any audio data to the cloud.
